Nellie’s undies were small and sexy and rather see-through, and wildly inappropriate for what she was doing. It was the middle of summer, and she was at a barbeque, and drunk, and for some reason everyone was playing candlesticks.
Candlesticks, the children’s game where you get tagged and freeze and people crawled through your legs.
Nellie had been tagged, but she was standing with her feet together, quite firmly. One of the guys came towards her. He stopped and looked at her.
“Nope,” she said.
“Don’t you want me to unfreeze you?”
Nellie shrugged. “It’s just a game.”
“We’re meant to.”
“We’re not eight years old. So nope, thank you all the same.”
The guy went away.
A woman came over. A woman Nellie had noticed earlier. Laughing and interested and a friend of someone’s friend. Nellie looked at her, and moved her feet apart, and the woman crawled between her legs. Then she stood up, grinning at Nellie, brushing grass off her hands and knees.
Nellie was almost certain she’d looked upwards, while she was underneath Nellie.
“You shouldn’t have worn a skirt,” the woman said. She had shorts, and seemed quite pleased with herself.
“I shouldn’t have worn a lot of things.”
“Nice undies,” the women said, and grinned, and ran away.
Nellie was still standing there looking after her when she got tagged again.
“Fuck,” she said, and went back to standing still.
